CHAPTER 18

AERRE

I WAS TAPPING MY foot as I leaned against the front wall outside of Phantom Fangs Lair. I was by the front door, looking at the tan stucco and pressing my fingers into the grooves with a maddening fixation. My tics were all over the place right now, exploding with my nervousness and agitation over this crazy idea to hide away in Howling Sky. It was time for us to head out, to leave Wolf Bridge for essentially an entire month. The roader’s engine was already running, growling its impatience. We had packed all we needed in the cargo bed and tied it all down. We had our combat belts but were otherwise dressed casually for a trip that shouldn’t meet too much resistance. There was nothing left to do but go.

Just go.

Were we really prepared? My mind was running a million miles a second, and uncertainty clouded every thought.

Sorissa grabbed my arm, startling me. Her eyes were wide, staring straight into my damn soul. “What’s wrong?”

I bit my lip and looked away from her as I tried to focus on stopping my foot from tapping. I managed to tone it down, but damn. It was like I had a damaged nerve.

“You should talk to your sister and mother before we leave,” Sorissa said. “You haven’t, have you?”

I shook my head.

“Caspian,” she called, “we need to stop in the Tech Off Zone, where Aerre’s family lives.”

Caspian glanced at me after opening the front passenger door of the roader. “We can do that.” Rodrick was already in his place in the backseat, grumbling about how he always got seated back there even though he was the tallest and largest. Todd was at the wheel, and Caspian climbed into the seat next to him. “So, we doing that, or are you planning on standing there all day?”

I hated how Caspian was looking at me. I hated that he challenged the king to the Alpha Challenge, but I was also fucking proud of him for doing it. I couldn’t hold his gaze. I felt as if I was glued to the building, merging with the wall, getting sucked inside. I was going. Everything was changing, and we were making an even bigger change. Nothing I saw happening in our future gave me any peace of fucking mind, though. I was practically paralyzed. I couldn’t speak.

I hadn’t talked to Trace or Mom in years, but Sorissa was right. Koren was right. I needed to talk to them. Gods forbid if I never saw them again after this and I passed this opportunity by, I would never forgive myself. Hell, I’d never forgive myself for leaving. There was too much that could happen while we were gone. Paws Peak could come back and take over. The vampires could join with them or take over instead. Maybe all the humans they handed over were some sort of ploy, some crazy-ass step in achieving their plan of world domination or destruction. Caspian could lose to the king on the full moon.
